The Ferrari 288 GTO is a sports car designed by Pininfarina and built by Ferrari in 1984.
The 288 GTO is optically based on the Ferrari 308 GTB and was designed for the Group B rallies, but was never used as a racing car. The name GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologata homologated, and was used previously for the Ferrari 250 GTO racing car from 1962 and later by the Ferrari 599 GTO in 2010. To be admitted to the Group B rally Ferrari had a minimum of 200 build copies. Eventually it became 272. Because the car was developed as a racing car, the engine delivers 400 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.
In 1986, Ferrari built 5 288 GTO Evoluzione models with a more aggressive appearance and an engine that produced up to 650 hp. The 288 GTO Evoluzione eventually formed the basis of the Ferrari F40.
